Pieta is painted from a photograph of Michelangelo’s iconic sculpture of Mother Mary. When I created this piece, I was at the start of my spiritual awakening, exploring concepts of God beyond the constraints of religion. I was drawn to the peace in Mary’s face and the strength she radiated. Years after painting it, I learned she was holding her dying son in that moment, and the depth of the piece’s meaning became even more profound to me.
