Native is one of the most profound pieces I’ve ever created, inspired by Edward S. Curtis’s photograph of Bear Bull, a Native American Indian. His profile and exquisite hairstyle captivated me. I painted this during one of the most challenging times of my journey with chronic pain; its creation became my solace. There were days when the pain was so intense I could barely move, but when I reached my canvas, I found relief. Painting with Native American chants playing, I often felt like I left my body, returning later to see the work created.
